Molasses Creek's Thanksgiving Photoshoot for "Something Worth Having"

We had a warm Thanksgiving on Ocracoke this year and rounded up our island concerts with a sold out show at Deepwater Theater.  Gerald Hampton, his wife Beth, and his mother Nancy came to Ocracoke to spend the holiday with kids and grandkids.
On Sunday after Thanksgiving, we rendezvoused with Justin Casey and Randy Woolard for a photoshoot for the new album.  Last time we did this was in 2012 for An Island Out of Time.  Much warmer this round!  In 2012 we shivered up and down the beach, trying to look casual while the wind cut through our thin dressy clothes.  We didn’t exactly sweat this year, but the weather was beautiful.
We shot most of the photos around the Ocracoke Lighthouse property, even venturing inside for a few pictures.
Great acoustics!

Twas quite a treat and the acoustics inside the lighthouse made us want to record an album in there.
After we finished at that location we shuffled our gear over to the historic Hurricane House, another place that we love.  Many thanks to the National Park Service and to Bobby Woodwell for allowing us to search for inspiration around their places!

Finley Woolston and the Joyful Band of Singers visit Ocracoke Island

This last Friday we had a real treat on the island when the voice of Public Radio East, Finley Woolston and his Joyful Band of Singers presented us with an energetic concert of Choral Music for Advent and Christmas through the ages.  The performance was a musical journey from Gregorian Chant to the Renaissance, early Latin and German, Traditional English and American, Modern Carols and Gospel.   The lights on the towering Christmas tree at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church illuminated the singers on stage, creating a glowing setting for the audience that packed the church.  Thanks to Finley and crew for sharing their talents with Ocracoke, and to Ocracoke Alive and the Ocracoke United Methodist Church for helping to bring them here!

Molasses Creek's “Something Worth Having” Indiegogo Campaign Off to a Good Start.  Come stay on Ocracoke and have dinner with us!

Since our last newsletter, we shot a mini-film and launched a crowd fundraising campaign to raise $10,000 in support of the promotion of our new album, Something Worth Having.  In the first ten days you helped us raise $4025/10,000.  Great job and thank you so much!  As of this post date on 12/12/13, we had 20 days to go (Dec 31) and were a little over 40% of the way there.
There are some great Patron rewards for donations towards the campaign, for all levels of contribution.  We wanted to highlight  the “Ocracoke Island Retreat” level of sponsorship, for lovers of Ocracoke Island.  Although at $1500 it is a more significant patronage, the reward (A WEEK’S STAY ON OCRACOKE ISLAND FOR YOU AND UP TO 5 FRIENDS + MOLASSES CREEK COOKS YOU DINNER) is the going rate for a cottage retreat on the island.
Availability for the cottage for this reward is September-April.  Fall is an incredibly beautiful time to come to the island . . . the water is warm, the crowds are low, the shops and incredible restaurants are still open.  What a treat to surprise someone with for Christmas!  If you have any questions about any of the Patron Rewards, feel free to contact us at info@molassescreek.com. Many thanks to Fiddler Dave’s parents for their willingness to donate time at their rental cottage to help us raise some money!  Also, many thanks for spreading the word about our quest amongst your friends.  We tried to make the video entertaining enough to be a reward in itself! Click on the panel above or below view the latest in Patron rewards!

Molasses Creek to join Si Khan and Looping Brothers in Concert . . . Molasses Creek given a nod in Nicolas Logue's new gaming masterpiece, Razor Coast. . .

Schools have started and although families with older kids have left Ocracoke Island, September is a great time to come for a visit and catch a show at our Deepwater Theater.  Through the end of September, Molasses Creek hosts the Ocrafolk Opry on Wednesdays and a full Molasses Creek show on Thursday.  Tickets can be reserved ahead of time by calling 252-921-0260 or at the Deepwater Theater tab at www.molassescreek.com.
A few weeks ago, we had a visit from a troupe of musicians and artists from New York City.  Professional photographers Henry Lopez and Anna Campbell took some great shots we wanted to share with you.  Many thanks to them and to Neal and Elizabeth for the great tunes!

Molasses Creek joins Si Khan & the Looping Brothers for Two Concerts

We are very excited about two concerts on Monday, September 30 (Deepwater Theater, Ocracoke Island, NC) and Tuesday, October 1 (Washington Civic Center, Washington, NC).  Renown American folk musician, Si Khan, is celebrating his 40th year as a recording artist and is on tour with the German bluegrass band, the Looping Brothers.  They have just released a new album, Aragon Mill: The Bluegrass Sessions.  It features some of Si's most beloved favorites, including “Aragon Mill,” “Gone Gonna Rise Again,” “Wild Rose of the Mountain” and “Blue Ridge Mountain Refugee.”

"While some people may think of Si Kahn as primarily a folk songwriter, he’s been writing, performing and recording bluegrass music since the beginning of his music career. As Tim O’Brien notes, “Si Kahn’s fine songs have always held a mirror to the hardships and hopes of southern working men and women, which is why they fit so well with the string band sound on Aragon Mill: The Bluegrass Sessions. These are true life stories in a real hands on setting.”

But who ever imagined that Si would make his “greatest hits” CD with a German bluegrass band? The Looping Brothers (think Ira and Charlie Louvin) are one of Europe’s most respected, experienced and best-loved bluegrass bands, having worked and toured with such bluegrass legends as Bill Monroe, the Osborne Brothers, Kenny Baker, Josh Graves and Dan Crary.

Bluegrass artists who’ve recorded some of the songs on this CD and others by Si include Kathy Mattea, Hazel Dickens, Dry Branch Fire Squad, the Krüger Brothers, Molly O’Brien, Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum, Charles Sawtelle, The Gordons, the Red Clay Ramblers and Robin & Linda Williams.

Si’s bluegrass songwriting has received serious critical acclaim. According to Dave Higgs, writing in Bluegrass News, “In a world rife with many talented songwriters, Si Kahn stands alone. And his deeply thoughtful, elegantly simple, sometimes majestic, often achingly moving and always hard-hitting songs have stood, and will continue to stand, the test of time.”

Bluegrass legend Laurie Lewis adds, in her introduction to Aragon Mill: The Bluegrass Sessions, “But the treatment here, in the capable hands of the Looping Brothers, casts each of these in a new light…All the material was chosen for the project by the Looping Brothers, who have placed each song in a shining bluegrass setting, surrounded by the intricate filigree of banjo, fiddle, mandolin and guitar. Si and his songs are jewels here on Earth.”

To take a listen, visit www.airplaydirect.com/music/AragonMill/.   Concert tickets will be available through the Beaufort County Arts Council at www.beaufortcountyartscouncil.org.  Hope to see you there!

Soundside Studio Update

Gary recently upgraded the mixing system of Soundside Studios to computer.  Previously, he mixed albums live in the recording room (an organic art form), but now he is working on a whole new level of detail on the computer!  We are very excited about the remixes of the national version of the 2013 Molasses Creek Festival release he is sending our way (Due out late this year!).  He even hooked up his touring cycle so he can power the whole thing by riding his 12 speed.  For mixes that require his complete attention, he has the system powered by his dog, Abner, in a large hamster wheel.

Molasses Ocracats

Molasses Creek fan, Cynthia Hall, recently adopted two Ocracat kittens when they were on Ocracoke Island.  She came out to a Molasses Creek performance at Deepwater Theater and was inspired by the music to name her kitties. . .
Jobell & Captain Molasses!

Here they are recovering from an exhausting vacation.

Ocracats is an Ocracoke non-profit organization that works to control the feral cat population of the island.  They capture and “fix” Ocracoke’s wild cats and kittens and find homes on and off the island for many of these fine critters.  For more information visit http://www.ocracats.org

Razor Coast Release

Although Molasses Creek has yet to have any music placed on The Big Bang Theory, the next best thing has just occurred!  Roleplaying gamemaster and Molasses Creek fan, Nicolas Logue, has just released an incredible 500 page campaign called The Razor Coast.  In the introduction he gives a nod to Molasses Creek for musical inspiration!  His kickstarter campaign raised over $123,000 to fund the release. Below is excerpt from the description on the Kickstarter page.  For information on how to order visit Frog God Games at http://talesofthefroggod.com/.  Thanks for letting us be a part of your magic Nick!

Razor Coast is the long anticipated Caribe-Polynesian flavored, Age of Sail swashbuckling RPG campaign envisioned and designed by Nicolas Logue. It has been praised for its ambitious and original design, its epic flavor and its lurid, full-color art – including a cover by the award winning Wayne Reynolds.

Logue tapped a team of veteran designers to help develop and write Razor Coast, including Lou Agresta, Adam Daigle, Tim Hitchcock, and John Ling. Razor Coast isn’t just an adventure, it’s part setting, part adventure path, and part toolkit to build your own unique campaign. It’s non-linear and will never play the same way twice.

We filled it with corrupt municipal Dragoons, dastardly smuggling rings, weresharks – lots of weresharks - desperate naval battles, oppressed tribes craving heroes, witches, cursed islands, legendary treasure troves, an impending apocalypse or two, demon pirates, retired assassins, undead worms, gator men, failed heroes waiting to be redeemed, dark conspiracies brewing in the oceans depths, vengeful ghosts…oh – and mutating cannibal pygmies. Who doesn’t like those?

Cecil Train Heads West

This newsletter's listening track comes from Fiddler Dave's first instrumental recording, Cecil Train Heads West.  At the time of its release in 2004, Molasses Creek was comprised of Gary Mitchell & wife Kitty (who created the artwork for the album), and Fiddler Dave with occasional appearances by other guest performers.  Lou Castro and Marcy Brenner were fairly new to the Ocracoke music scene and this album represents one of the first musical collaborations between Lou and Fiddler Dave.  Lou added some mighty fine slide resonator guitar to this original fiddle tune by Fiddler Dave.  Folks who are signed up on the Molasses Creek e-News list received a link to download an mp3 of the tune (you can sign up at www.molassescreek.com/news-signup).  If you are not on the list and would like to receive the tune, just email Fiddler Dave at info@molassescreek.com. The album can be purchased through the Molasses Creek store or by clicking this album picture.

Performances this weekend in Washington & Greenville. Plus Molasses Creek looks for a new touring vehicle . . .

Hi friends!

We have been spending these past couple of stormy days working and reworking our Festival Release at Soundside Studio, preparing it for remixing and a national release.  We have a new track (Choo Choo Chaboogie/Old Yazoo) and have been having a great time orchestrating this fun number with pots and pans, artificial chickens, harmonies, and even a borrowed customer bell from the Ocracoke Post Office.  Molasses Creek shows at our Deepwater Theater continue to be sold out, and we are seeing a lot of new faces.  If you are coming to the island, we look forward to seeing you at the Ocrafolk Opry on Wednesdays or Molasses Creek on Thursdays.  We recommend getting tickets in advance through our website or by calling 252-921-0260.

Two Shows in Eastern Carolina this Weekend (Sunday, August 18)!

You have two chances to catch Molasses Creek for free in eastern Carolina, this Sunday, August 18!  From 1-3 PM we will be in concert at Harmony on the Harbor at Festival Park, in Washington, NC.  In the evening (7:00 PM) we will be rounding out the 40th year of Greenville Sunday in the Park at the Town Commons in Greenville, NC.  The Green Grass Cloggers will be joining us to help celebrate director Stuart Aronson's forty years of service in creating fabulous summertime fun.  Hope to see everyone at both performances.  Wahoo!

Molasses Creek retires Ole Bessie and looks for the next Touring Vehicle

Molasses Creek looks for the next touring van! Anyone out there with a lead?
After many faithful years of service, the time has come to retire Molasses Creek's faithful band van to the Happy Tour Bus Land in the sky (or perhaps Pamlico Sound).  This steadfast musical companion has carried us north to Canada and out west to New Mexico, through the dusty plains and northeast mud-season.   We are currently looking at used Ford 350 Passenger Vans.  If any fans out there have a lead on such a stalwart companion without too many miles, send us a bleep (info@molassescreek.com).  We would love to hear about it!

Gary Mitchell's "The Waterman" is reborn on Molasses Creek's latest release

Molasses Creek 2000 ensemble w/Garrison Keillor

One of the first songs that Molasses Creek recorded when they formed in 1993 (Gary and Kitty Mitchell, & Fiddler Dave), is Gary Mitchell's classic, "The Waterman".  For this year's 2013 Molasses Creek album we are including a new arrangement of this audience favorite.  To celebrate, we sent a link to our email list for folks to download the live version from our appearance on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion in 2000.  Joining the original trio for this national performance was friend and banjoist, Stan Brown.  If you would like to be on our email newslist, or to have the mp3 emailed to you, just send Fiddler Dave a note at info@molassescreek.com.

Dragonflies Awarded Ocracoke Island Medals of Honor . . . Giant Slugs Stage Protest

Those of you who have visited our fair island of Ocracoke, North Carolina, may have marveled at the beauty of our 13 miles of unspoiled beaches, our quaint historic village with 900 inhabitants, and the many mosquitoes who call it home.  Despite the rainy summer, this year we have been blessed with a less than normal number of these blood sucking critters, but during these past two weeks they have made a comeback.

Fortunately the dragonflies have been waiting for the return of their favorite snack.  Last night Fiddler Dave even saw a bat making the rounds at dusk, swooping and feasting.  The Ocracoke Chamber of Commerce is considering awarding medals to these amazing acrobats for their service to the humans on our sandbar.

A dragonfly visiting Fiddler Dave's garden
The soggy weather has also inspired some HUGE slugs, and they have great aspirations for such slow-moving creatures.  There is one that makes a nightly journey up Fiddler Dave's back porch steps, underneath the storm door, and around to the cat food dish for a nocturnal banquet.  Last night, two of them climbed up the storm door and slimed around the glass in some intricate courting dance.  Yum!

Fiddler Dave's wife Amy looks on while giant slugs dance
That's all for this issue.  Keep checking at our Facebook page for photos and updates from this weekend.  Take care!

Working on Choo Choo Chaboogie/Take Me Back to Old Yazoo. Molasses Creek Goes Live on Spotify. Ocracoke Figs are In!

Ocracoke Figs are Ripe!
Hey friends,

We've had some great shows on Ocracoke at Deepwater Theater these past two weeks!  Wonderful audiences at the Ocrafolk Opry and Molasses Creek concerts.  Although we are in the midst of summer, the weather has not hit dogs-days hot yet.  And in spite of all the rain we have had this season the mosquitoes are remarkable tame (Fiddler Dave's son, Lachlan, managed to harness some this week and they pulled him around the beach on a sand sled!)

This last week, Molasses Creek began working in Gary's Soundside Studio on a song that Louie found called Choo Choo Ch'boogie by Louis Jordan.  Here is an old black and white version of the song!

With that we are putting another old song that we found being done by the Boswell Sisters and Cab Calloway called Old Yazoo.

We hope to have the new arrangement live and on stage this next week.

Over the weekend, Gary is off to the Raleigh area to start work on tweaking the Festival Release 2013 to prepare it for national release later this year!

Molasses Creek Catalog Goes Live on Spotify

For those fans who subscribe to Spotify, Molasses Creek's catalog of past releases went live this last week, updating the listing to 10 albums, 120 + songs.  Songs are also available through iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, and more! Enjoy and spread the word about Molasses Creek to your friends! Our latest Ocrafolk Festival Release 2013 is available as a CD through our online store (as well as more CDs, T-shirts, and mugs!)

Ocracoke Island News

The most exciting new news is that Ocracoke figs are beginning to come in.  Everyone is busy scurrying around gathering the quickly ripening fruit.  The trees have to be checked every day, or the birds will claim the best of the crop!  If it rains, then figs must be picked extra quick or they will go sour.  There are around 7 different types of fig trees on Ocracoke Island.  In our environment, the trees require very little care . . . they practically grow wild!
The fig tree at the Ocracoke Preservation Society
If you have ever picked figs, you will notice that the tree secretes a milky fluid that will give the picker a slight itchy rash . . . easily washed off and well worth the effort.  Fiddler Dave and Lachlan have been checking the tree at the Ocracoke Preservation Society daily for Amy Howard (wife and  the administrator for OPS).  Today they took home between 5 & 10 pounds!  They ferry the fruit back to Amy's mom, Julie Howard, who cooks them down with sugar to make preserves and cans them for keeping.
Not quite ripe yet!

These preserves then return to OPS for events and for sale at the store.  Check the OPS website if you are headed to Ocracoke to find out what porch talks are being offered (there is one on figs and fig trees).

If you have picked up some fig preserves (or ordered a jar through the OPS gift shop), one of our favorite ways to use them is to make a traditional Ocracoke Island Fig Cake.  Here is a recipe courtesy of the Ocrafolk Festival (this recipe was adapted by Debbie Wells and featured on the 2011 Ocrafolk Festival T-shirt).

Fig Cake Recipe
3 large eggs
1 1/2 c sugar
1 c vegetable oil
2 c plain flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground allspice
1/2 c buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 c walnuts coarsely chopped
2 c preserved figs cut up

Grease and flour one large tube or bundt pan
Preheat oven to 350

In a medium mixing bowl, beat eggs until light and foamy.  Add sugar and beat until pale, add oil slowly and beat another minute. Sift together flour, spices, salt and soda.  Add to eggs alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.  Stir in figs, nuts and vanilla. Pour into prepared pan and place in a preheated oven.  Bake for 45 minutes or until cake tests done with a toothpick.  Cool in pan for 20 minutes then invert onto a rack and cool completely.  Transfer to a serving plate and enjoy!

Fish Printing Fun!

Also this week at the OPS Museum, David Scott and Melinda Esham directed a fantastic fish printing session.  Here are some photos.

Opening for Ralph Stanley and an Ocracoke 4th of July!

Molasses Creek at the Lost Colony Waterside Theatre, Roanoke Island, NC

Hi friends!

This last week was a busy one with 4th of July activities here at home on Ocracoke Island, and a Sunday opening for Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys at the Lost Colony Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island.
Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys
The Waterside Theatre is a beautiful and fascinating place to perform.  The set for the world famous Lost Colony outdoor drama, we fully expected colonists and natives to come surging out on to the stage during a fiddle breakdown.  Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Green, The Lost Colony outdoor drama is celebrating its 76th season this year!  You can read more about it at http://thelostcolony.org.

As the sun set, the light on the sound waters behind the theater palisade faded and the starry night sky formed a seamless backdrop, joining with the canopy of live oak trees that border the audience and the stage.  We couldn't think of a more beautiful place to enjoy a concert by one of the cultural treasures of our country.  At 86, Ralph Stanley stood on stage for the entire concert, gracing the audience with sounds and songs from the mountain communities of old.

Here are some more pictures around the stage of the Waterside Theatre.

4th of July Fun on Ocracoke Island
Blackbeard getting a picture with a young fan

While we are talking about famous historic places and characters of the Outer Banks, we will give you a shot of Emmet Temple as Blackbeard the pirate.  Blackbeard met his fate off of Ocracoke Island in November of 1718 when he was hunted down by Lt. Robert Maynard.  Ever since then, his ghost has reappeared (with head) at holiday events around the island . . . and 4th of July is no exception.
Blackbeard being interviewed Ocracoke Radio personality, Daphne Bennink
The 4th kicked off with a flag raising, a sandcastle contest, and a fig cake bakeoff.  Fiddler Dave joined Captain Rob Temple for two pirate shows during the afternoon, the Ocracoke parade wound its way through the village, and the evening rounded off with Molasses Creek playing for a traditional Ocracoke squaredance, hosted by local caller and island historian Philip Howard.  Unfortunately a quick storm popped up right as Martin Garrish and the Ocracoke Rockers were set to perform . . . but other than that weather event, the day went perfectly.
A stunning beach day for the 4th!
